The One Book Project was led by the Kern County Library and California State University, Bakersfield’s First Year Experience Program. A juvenile companion title was offered, An American Plague: The True & Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 by Jim Murphy. Great community discussion came out of the programming created for this read to explore the true story of Henrietta Lacks, whose virulent cancer cells, taken without her knowledge in 1951, were the first to grow outside of the human body. They became one of the most important tools in medicine, cloning, gene mapping, and more
