**Where is the Californian?**
For several years, the Kern County Library provided
the e-edition of The Bakersfield Californian on its website. In 2020, the Californian
changed its e-edition platform to PressReader. Because PressReader does not have
an option for libraries to subscribe to newspapers within a limited geographical
area, access to The Bakersfield Californian is no longer available via the library.
Print copes are available at most branches and you can also access a limited number
of articles online.

The Genealogy Room collection, located within the **Beale Memorial Library**, contains
books, magazines, printed vital records, and books on heraldry and family names.
Complete California census records through 1920 are also available on microfilm.
Additionally, the collection includes the microfiche index to the collection of 
the Sutro Library. In 2014, 300 new genealogy books were added to the collection,
covering Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Missouri. The Genealogy Room is open,
during most normal operating hours of the Beale Memorial Library. Volunteers from
the **[Kern County Genealogical Society](http://www.kerngenealogical.org/)** are
on hand to assist customers.

Part of the Online Archive of California (OAC) launched in 2002, which provides 
free public access to primary resource collections by more than 200 contributing
institutions throughout California, the Kern County Library’s photograph collection
includes images of historical interest of Bakersfield and other areas of Kern County
from the late 1800s to 2001.

**The Local History Room is available to visitors based on staff availability.**

The Local History Room is located on the second floor, within the **Beale Memorial
Library, **701 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield, CA, 93301.The collection contains books,
pamphlets, periodicals, newsletters, vault materials, and vertical files on over
900 subjects. The Local History room’s most popular items include Bakersfield City
Directories dating back to 1899; Kern County Telephone directories dating back to
1940; and donated elementary, junior high, high school, and college yearbooks mainly
from the 1960s and 1970s. Some primary sources in the collection go as far back 
as the 1800s.

Microfilm is also available in the Local History room to view newspapers not digitized,
such as Shafter, Taft, Delano, and additional surrounding areas. Digitized access
to the Bakersfield Californian for 1875-1977, limited issues of 2013-2017, The Shafter
Press (1935-2014), and Shafter Progress (1929-1962) are available on [Newspaper Archive](http://access.newspaperarchive.com.ke.ezproxy.sjvls.org/).
Microfilm is also available in the Local History Room for the Bakersfield Californian(
1978-present), as well as other newspapers that have not yet been digitized, such
as Taft, Delano, Ridgecrest, and additional surrounding areas.

The collection materials cannot be checked out and can only be used in the Local
History Room.

The National Archives has collections spanning from general topics and through the
19th to 21st century. Among the notable collections include photos of WWII, Women’s
Suffrage, and American Indians.

#### 󠀁[SJVLS Photo Heritage Collection](https://kerncountylibrary.org/sjvls-photo-heritage-collection/)󠁿

The San Joaquin Valley Digitization Project began in the Summer of 2001. The project
provided the 9 public libraries of the San Joaquin Valley Library System (SJVLS)
with equipment and training so that they could digitize portions of their historical
photograph collections. This Project aimed to improve access to historical images
found in the region, to preserve the photographs and their valuable content, and
to put in place the equipment, skills, and infrastructure that would enable the 
SJVLS member libraries to work independently to digitize the unique content in their
collections. would not have been possible without the support of the California 
State Library, and the funding available under the Library Services and Technology
Act.

#### 󠀁[America’s Job Center of Kern](https://kerncountylibrary.org/americas-job-center-of-kern/)󠁿

A local One-Stop Center within the County of Kern that serves a training center 
for local job seekers. Many services are available, including no-cost training, 
job placement services, and job-hunting resources.
