Kern County Library Director Nancy Kerr spent Friday morning moving Post-it notes around.

Was there a way, she was wondering, to move money around and keep from having to close a library in Bakersfield? The answer, sadly, was probably not.

Friday morning, a bit before 9 a.m., the Kern County Administrative Office released three proposals — roadmaps, really — for the new fiscal year that will start July 1.

“We looked at the numbers and cringed,“ Kerr said.

The various plans cut general fund spending — which this year totals about $373 million — between 2.5 and 6.9 percent.
