Let voters decide if they want to fund county libraries

Release Date: THURSDAY, FEB 4, 2016

A day of reckoning for the Kern County Library may soon be at hand.

A tug-of-war is underway, with one camp urging Kern County Supervisors to privatize the library system under a company that specializes in library management, essentially absolving county government of the responsibility, and another camp urging supervisors to keep the “public” in “public library” by valuing, supporting and funding an important community resource. They’re asking that supervisors place a one-eighth-cent sales tax increase on the November ballot to provide stable funding for the library.

Supervisors have shown little interest thus far in putting the measure on the ballot.
