Information We Collect About You

Query:

Just what types of information does the Kern County Library collect about patrons, and how long is this kept in the database?

Answer:

The Library collects the following information from borrowers. The facts requested are the ones we believe we need in order to track borrowed materials and account for and plan library services.

  • Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Home Telephone Numbers
  • Work Telephone Number
  • Birth Date
  • Gender
  • Driver's License or DMV ID Number
  • Residence Address (if different from Mailing Address)
  • Email address for Notices (optional)

Borrowers who do not owe money and have not performed a transaction in two years are purged from the database.

When a borrower returns an item by the due date, the record of the checkout is automatically purged from the database. Thus no continuing records of borrower activity are kept except in the case of past due materials.

The confidentiality of public library registration and circulation records are protected by Section 6267 of the California Government Code. These records can only be released by order of an appropriate superior Court.
