A boy recounts his annual summer trips to rural Illinois with his sister during the Great Depression to visit their larger-than-life grandmother. Newberry Honor book. A collection of short stories which could be edited with a bit of work, especially the first two, Shotgun Cheathams last night above ground and The mouse in the milk. The first deals with the children seeing their first corpse and grandma spinning a tale to satisfy the nosy out-of-town newspaper man. In the second, grandma effectively squelches the town hoodlums when they blow up her mailbox and the neighbors privy. For older children; grandma is quite a character.
