Kern County Library Foundation

The purpose of the Kern County Library Foundation is to raise funds which will be used towards the enhancement and enrichment of the Kern County Library system.

Formed in 1986, the initial objective of the Foundation was to raise funds for the enrichment and enhancement of the interior of the new downtown Beale Memorial Library located in Bakersfield, which is the main library and headquarters support facility for all Kern County Library branches. One million six hundred thousand ($1.6) was raised for this purpose. In fulfillment of its mission, the Foundation focused its expenditures on the Arkelian Children's Library which included enhancements to the storytelling pit, children's collections and programs, including noted author visits; purchasing technological enrichments for the audio-visual room and the auditorium; and an outstanding California fine arts collection from the 19th and 20th century which includes sculpture and paintings, and the Carleton Watkins photography collection. Other enhancements included gifting a Steinway grand piano for the auditorium. Various interior planters and live plants were also gifted to the Beale Memorial Library.

In 1996, the Fern M. Doe endowment was established when Fern M. Doe, a Bakersfield schoolteacher, left a bequest of $700,000 to the Kern County Library Foundation. This endowment provided funding for reference and fine arts collections enhancements countywide at all branches. To acknowledge this generous endowment, the reference center at the Beale Memorial Library was renamed the Fern Doe Reference Center. Other contributions have been made to support a Foundation Center Cooperating Collection (a collection of specialized private foundation grant research materials and center being undertaken by the Kern County Library) which will help the public to find and locate possible granting agencies.

The Foundation thanks its many contributors for their generous gifts to the Library to acquire many enhancements for the Kern County Library for the public to enjoy.

If you are interested in supporting the Library, please make your tax deductible contribution payable to the Kern County Library Foundation c/o Kern County Library, 701 Truxtun Ave. Bakersfield, CA 93301.
